Local Veterans Invited to Visit for Refreshments, Poppies

To celebrate Veteran’s Day, Suddenlink is serving refreshments and distributing poppies to Veterans who stop by the Suddenlink store in Bryan Nov. 5-9.  The poppies, donated by Brazos County VFW Post 4692, are inspired by the World War One poem “In Flanders Field,” by John McCrae (see below).

Customers are also encouraged to stop in and sign thank-you cards that will be sent to The Texas National Guard – Bryan Unit serving in Afghanistan.

A special ceremony will be held Nov. 9, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., to honor nine Suddenlink and Suddenlink Media employees who have served in the armed forces.  Other veterans are encouraged to take part as well.

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae, 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
