Cable in the Workforce

Two new reports find that the cable industry is increasingly contributing to Texas’ robust economy, and that nationally the industry’s workforce is becoming more diverse.


Cable’s annual Investing in America study finds that cable’s economic impact in Texas has grown by almost $4 billion over the past two years, to a total of $26.13 billion in 2018. Likewise, cable’s workforce also continues to grow, reaching 18,530 employees and generating 166,170 direct and indirect jobs. Cable’s jobs are spread across the state, with at least 300 employees in each of Texas’ 36 congressional districts.

The cable industry in Texas is part of a booming state economy with 14 million workers and a 3.4% unemployment rate, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Meanwhile, the face of cable’s workforce is becoming more diverse. Every two years, Women in Cable Telecommunications and the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) – associations representing women and people of color – measure the diversity of the industry’s employees according to a number of factors.

The most recent studies, released during the industry’s annual Diversity Week, had several interesting takeaways:

  • Women make up 35% of the cable industry workforce (below the national benchmark).
  • People of color make up 44% of the cable industry workforce (above the national benchmark).
  • 26% of executive and senior-level manager positions are held by people of color, compared to the national benchmark of 15%.
  • 35% of those positions are held by women, slightly above the national benchmark of 30%.

Among the leaders in diversifying is Comcast – during Diversity Week, the company received the 2019 Diversity Champion Award from the Walter Kaitz Foundation. The award “recognizes the company’s thoughtful and inclusive leadership in an environment in which diversity flourishes.”
