Spectrum Hosts First Community Impact Day in Austin
Spectrum volunteers to repair three homes, host community resource fair and mentoring session on Saturday, Nov. 2
AUSTIN, T.X. – More than 80 Spectrum employee volunteers will be here Saturday to help celebrate Spectrum’s Community Impact Day, the first of its kind in Austin.
As part of the day, volunteers will support Charter Communications, Inc.’s national philanthropic initiative, Spectrum Housing Assist. Helping others is rooted in our commitment to improve 50,000 homes in the communities we live in and serve by 2020.
Spectrum partners with Rebuilding Together to provide critical home repairs to low-income homeowners. In Austin, Spectrum and Rebuilding Together will bring the mission of safe and healthy homes to three different homeowners in East Austin, including German and Dolores who reside in Austin with their family. They purchased the home 32 years ago. Safety modifications, including substantial roofing and flooring repairs, will be provided by Rebuilding Together Austin and Spectrum volunteers, so this family can continue to live in the home they love.
Volunteers will also work at Rosa’s home, a widowed mother of six. She has always done her best to provide for her children, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. She is known in her neighborhood for always having food, drink, or time for a chat on her front porch. Her son, Chris, returned to live with Rosa after he was honorably discharged from the Army due to a debilitating injury. After spending her life caring for others, Rose will have the opportunity to have her home repaired by Spectrum volunteers. Volunteer tasks include ceiling fan installation, painting the kitchen and living room, building stairs and railings, and building a ramp.
And finally, volunteers will work on the home of Albert and Dale, (in-laws of Rosa), who live next door to Rosa. Albert grew up in the home and returned when his mother passed away in 1994. Dale also plays an integral role in the community, volunteering her time at Zavala Elementary School. Their daughter, Sonia, is thankful to Rebuilding Together Austin and the Spectrum volunteers because she knows that her parents will now be able to age in place, in a neighborhood that sometimes feels like it’s “growing without [them].” Volunteer tasks include demolishing the fence, painting a bedroom and the kitchen, replacing window trim, landscaping, painting a wrought iron fence, and installing shelving in back laundry room.
Spectrum is also hosting a 90-minute Mentoring Session from 10–11:30 a.m. at Zavala Elementary school, located at 310 Robert T Martinez Jr. St. Austin. Youth ages 13-18 are invited to join a panel of distinguished mentors from a variety of industries as they share their personal challenges and successes.
Another highlight of the day is the community resource fair, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., which includes nonprofit booths, Spectrum job recruiters, food trucks, live music, and free t-shirt giveaways from Univision. Special guest appearances include: Emmy® award-winning reporter from Univision Karina Banda and also from Univision, Jomari Goyso, TV personality and beauty expert.
“At Spectrum, our technicians serve thousands of customers in their homes every day, and through Spectrum Housing Assist, we can serve the community by helping make our neighbors’ homes safe and healthy,” said Ann Montgomery, Spectrum Area Vice President, Field Operations. “Our area employees are happy to join the talented Rebuilding Together team to make a long-lasting impact in our community.”
Additionally, volunteers will be onsite to distribute more than 250 Safe and Healthy Home Kits, while supplies last. The kits are free and contain a weather alert radio, first aid kit, carbon monoxide tester, smoke alarm, cleaning wipes, weather stripping, and much more.
Since its inception, Spectrum has helped improve more than 37,000 homes. To learn more about Spectrum Community Impact, visitcommunityimpact.spectrum.com
