Suddenlink boosts Internet speeds
The company earlier announced it has embarked on a three-year, companywide program calling for $350 million in capital investments above and beyond the company's traditional capital spending levels

In keeping up with the demand for information at your fingertips, Suddenlink Communications increased its Internet package speeds last week for their customers. Services with download speeds up to 1, 8 and 10 megabytes per second (Mbps) will be increased up to 1.5, 10 and 15 Mbps, respectively, and will be renamed accordingly: Suddenlink High Speed Internet 1.5, 10.0 and 15.0..."We're doing a number of things to upgrade our facility to handle more and more demand for services." Comcast says it will donate $1M to Haiti aid

Of the $1 million, the company will split the $50,000 in cash between the American Red Cross and Telecoms Sans Frontieres, which has sent an emergency team with satellite mobile and fixed communications equipment to Haiti.

In addition, the company is providing digital voice services at no cost in Miami-Dade county at the Edison Little River neighborhood center for people to contact relatives in Haiti. More.

Texas Cable Operators Support Haiti Relief Effort
PSAs Airing on Cable Channels Across Texas

The five major cable operators serving Texas have agreed to donate air time to run public service announcements (PSAs) to raise money for the Haiti earthquake relief effort. PSAs will be viewed by Texans who subscribe to Cable One, Charter Communications, Comcast, Suddenlink Communications and Time Warner Cable. The five companies are members of the Texas Cable Association.

Among the PSAs for Haiti relief are the 30-second spot featuring First Lady Michelle Obama that calls for donations to the Red Cross and a spot featuring former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to raise contributions to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Learn more.


 

Net neutrality could lead to government censorship

On the heels of the Federal Communications Commission's decision to push forward with net neutrality regulation of the Internet, the White House's deputy chief technology officer equated Internet provider network management practices with Chinese government censorship. He said that "if it bothers you that the China government does it, it should bother you when your cable company does it."

However, it's government censorship of the Internet in the name of net neutrality that should concern Americans...

Not only does net neutrality infringe on free speech, it is unnecessary. Internet service providers have done a remarkable job to ensure the growth and success of the Internet. The latest FCC data show that Texas had 137 high speed ISPs offering service to 9.11 million customers in 2008 — up from 3.47 million customers in 2005 — and 88 percent of end-user premises with access to DSL and 96 percent to cable broadband. And the FCC reported in 2008 that more than 96 percent of all U.S. zip codes were served by two or more broadband service providers. Read more.
