Texas’ cable industry employs 112,410 Texans, directly or indirectly, and pumps more than $15.9 billion into the state’s economy, according to a recently released study conducted in 2010 by Bortz Media and Sports Group.

The industry’s positive impact on Texas has grown since a similar 2008 study conducted by Bortz. The 2008 study found that the state’s cable industry was responsible for 97,138 direct and indirect jobs and almost $14.7 billion in gross economic output.

“As this new study shows, the cable industry remains an important, growing contributor to Texas’ economy and to local economies, from Beaumont to El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley to the Panhandle,” said TCA Board Chairman John Owen, president, business services, Time Warner Cable West Region. “In this strongly competitive telecommunications environment, Texas cable operators not only are adding new jobs, we also are investing millions of dollars of our own money in infrastructure and technology to deliver the most advanced, innovative broadband, video and telephone services to Texans.”

According to the 2010 report, in addition to its economic impact, “The cable industry has led the development of the country’s broadband infrastructure, contributing both to a truly competitive telecommunications marketplace and to more robust growth in the penetration of broadband services. The industry has also fundamentally altered the manner in which most Americans view television, and through a continuing pattern of innovation has introduced new content and services to consumers.”

Nationally, the U.S. cable industry supports nearly 1.8 million jobs representing gross economic output amounting to more than $251 billion, according to the study.
