Comcast Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month Recognizing Some of Houston’s Finest

First-ever Hispanic Hero Awards to recognize 10 Houstonians for Making a Difference in the Community

HOUSTON, TX (September 14, 2016) – In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Comcast today announced it will honor 10 community volunteers at the first-ever Comcast Hispanic Hero Awards gala. Held at the Houstonian Hotel, the honorees will be recognized for their commitment to making a difference in the community through volunteerism, mentorship, advocacy and civic engagement.

“These exceptional individuals have demonstrated selfless commitment,” said Ralph Martinez, senior vice president for Comcast’s Houston region. “The Hispanic Hero Awards give us an opportunity to recognize those who have played a vital role in positive change in their communities while celebrating the diversity of this great city.”

In addition to being recognized, each honoree will be featured in a 30-second Public Service Announcement that will air on Comcast and KTMD-Telemundo Houston. Comcast will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of the honoree’s choice.

2016 Hispanic Hero Award Honorees and Nominating Organizations

  • Pedro Caruso: Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston
  • Jose Castillo: American Red Cross
  • Hiram “Art” Contreras: Career and Recovery Resources
  • Greg Hernandez: Covenant House Texas
  • Maria Cantu-Ondarza: Legacy Community Health
  • Lenora Sorola-Pohlman: Houston East End Chamber of Commerce
  • Jessica Requena: Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star
  • Rafael Sarango: Salvation Army
  • Joseph Soliz: The Fort Bend Council
  • Jose Valdez: Houston East End Chamber of Commerce

Honorees were judged on criteria that included their personal impact in the community, helping further the mission of a nonprofit organization and overcoming personal obstacles. Judges for the awards include Tony Canales, KTMD-Telemundo Houston; Judson Robinson, Houston Area Urban League; Dr. Laura Murillo, Houston Hispanic Chamber; Robert Gallegos, Houston City Councilmember; Kevin Hattery, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston; Callen Allen, Houston ISD; and Ralph Martinez, Comcast-Houston.
